Brewers (16-12) v. Reds (14-13)

I love games that are practically over before they begin……only if the Brewers are the winning team of course.  This is the offensive outburst I have been waiting for!  That was fun to watch.   Not much more needs to be said for the offensive side of things, 15 runs on 20 hits.  That’s pretty good.  Now I hate to complain after such a good game, but I really feel the need to address Manny Parra.  Again, Manny did not pitch well last night.  He continues to be unable to break that trend and was very fortunate to only give up 2 runs.   Let’s look at some of Parra’s numbers from last night:

  • 8 hits and 4 walks in his 6 innings.  Walks continue to be a huge problem.  This equals a WHIP of 2.00, normally this would lead to giving up more than 2 runs.  Parra was lucky, not good.
  • Parra needed 119 pitches to get through 6 innings.  Only 69 of these pitches were strikes.  Both of these numbers are horrible.  He was staked to a 9 run lead after an inning and a half.  Just throw strikes!!  Stop walking people!!
  • Given a 9 run lead after an inning and a half, the starting pitcher should be able to cruise through 7 innings and rest the bullpen.  Parra was very close to getting pulled after loading the bases in consecutive innings and frankly, I was surprised that he came out to pitch the 6th with such a high pitch count.

This may seem like I am nitpicking, but I have still not seen what I would like out of Manny Parra.  Here is a preview for today’s game:

Once again, the weather doesn’t look very promising, but hopefully we get this one in.  Micah Owings goes for the Reds.  He has only put together one good start so far this year.  Owings is carrying a 4.84 ERA and opposing teams are hitting .287 against him.  The Brewers have already roughed him up once this year, so hopefully history will repeat itself.  Braden Looper takes the hill for the Crew.  Looper has been great this year.  He was a tough luck loser last time out against Dan Haren and was victimized by one bad inning.  He was perfect through the first 4 innings last time out.  I’m hoping for a second consecutive 2 game sweep!  Go Brewers!
